Design and Construction of Hin Tin Public Swimming Pool, Phase II, Shatin
Design Concept
Hin Tin Swimming Pool is a much-loved public amenity located in Sha Tin, New Territories. Originally built with only an external pool, and therefore closed during the winter months, CKL was commissioned to undertake the design and construction of a much needed second phase, which included adding a new heated indoor pool, remodelling the changing rooms, and improving the walkways and circulation links to the existing facilities, to create a new complex that can be used all year round.
The new indoor swimming facilities comprise one 10-lane, 50-metre Olympic-standard swimming pool with a 250-seat spectator stand, and a 10-metre diameter Jacuzzi/paddling pool, all sheltered beneath a large-span truss roof. During the summer months one side of the building can be completely opened to connect with the outdoor pool and garden area, while other wall openings and mechanically operated rooflights provide natural cross-ventilation during the winter months. An enclosed passageway between the pool and changing rooms protects bathers from the elements, with the whole complex designed to be free of barriers once past the new entrance lobby.
With its wide span and large volume, the new pool building was designed to be airy and light, while the extensive new walkways and canopies were detailed to complement the surrounding landscape and enhance the garden-like ambience of the complex as a whole.
This project was executed under a Design & Construction contract, with CKL maintaining a close working relationship with the construction team from China State Construction Engineering (HK) Ltd throughout all phases, from initial design to the completion of works.
