Lakeview Garden
Design Concept
Set on a knoll overlooking Sha Tin to the South and Shing Mun Reservoir to the north, the site is made up of a lower and upper platforms with an elevational difference of 15 meters. Access to the site is via a privately constructed road from the foothill.
On the lower platform, five blocks of apartment flats were planned to preserve as many existing trees as possible, and to provide open vista for the apartment units.
On the upper platform, building height was restricted to three storeys. Development of twenty one semidetached houses were opted.
The houses, arranged in two rows, are designed to present a rhythmical facade when viewed as an entity from distance. The same rhythm was scaled down and repeated to the columns and windows treatment to identify each house.
Each house comprise of two cubish blocks, volumns extracted from within form different rooms. Master bedroom is positive spaced with a slanted roof inserted with a vaulted skywindow, designed to allow “moon light” penetration, which this site generously offers.
Material selection was such that on the outer “crust” of each block, a rough texture was used, whilst the inner surface, a smooth surfaced ceramic tile was used.
While site formation is only performed to stabilize the slopes, the design aims to provide appropriate setting within the natural topography of the site. The architecture, scaled and detailed according to the domestic functions within, attempts to capture the ambience of the site. The rhythmic facade, the flowing contours and the lush greenery are woven to form an interesting fabric.
